… Please, let there be no strife between me and you… Genesis 13:8
Slowly, she slips her finger into her mouth. Then, like a viper she strikes, poking it into the baked good. In the matter of a few seconds, the matter’s settled. She gets the confection. Once again, I didn’t see it coming…
While my sister and I were children during our impasse, Abram and Lot look to be in a similar situation.
Abram and Lot aren’t getting along. Even their herdsmen are going at it. So Abram decides to separate the two families.
Interestingly, he gives Lot first pick when it comes to selecting territories. Of course, Lot selects the best land… well watered, lush, green. It’s also a mite dangerous. (More on that later.)
Abram gets Lot’s cast off. But, he doesn’t complain. Evidently (I’m assuming) family is family no matter when and where you live.
But God watches the proceedings and He sets thing right.
“Now lift up your eyes and look and look from the place that you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see, I will give you, and to your offspring forever.” (Genesis 13:15-16)
Wow. From my vantage point, God looks like he rewards those who attempt to be fair and back down. In other words, things may not look great at the moment, but if you hang tight, it appears all will turn out in the end.
At least, that’s what I get from this story.
I guess time will tell…
